13 Wine Industry Folks Share What They're Thankful for This Year

In another turbulent year, it's worthwhile to look back at the things that got us through. We asked people from across the wine industry what they're grateful for in the world of wine.

Valerie Kathawala

Wine journalist and editor

Beyond the basics — which I trust none of us are taking for granted right now — I'm most grateful for the incredible generosity of growers and industry experts in sharing their experience and knowledge so freely. It is nothing short of astonishing the way social media has flattened the hierarchy and opened access to the wine world. When I have a question about trellising or fermentation or the way things were done in a certain region a century ago, all I have to do is ask. A detailed, thoughtful answer usually comes through within hours. This sense of connection and understanding supercharges everyone.

André Mack

Sommelier, Restauranteur & Winemaker

This might sound a little conceited, but I’m really thankful for my intuition. Really being able to listen to it. It’s saved me. At my restaurant, I fired my chef and let the staff go. I’m not a punk who quits when it gets hard, but when you realize the culture is wrong, when you realize the toxicity came from the top, it’s a hard decision to make. So I’m thankful I listen to those inner voices.

Nicolas Capron-Manieux

Sommelier and writer, NCM Sommelier Services

I am thankful for adventurous drinkers, people who value their own curiosity and tastebuds above scores or preconceptions.

Ray Isle

Executive Wine Editor, Food + Wine, author, The World In A Wineglass

I’m thankful to have this damn book finally published! I was thankful that I no longer had to write it when I turned the manuscript in. And probably the best day of the year was getting the box of actual books with actual covers from the publisher. It’s the first book I’ve done!

Dan Petroski

Founder, Massican Wines

I am thankful that many of my colleagues and peers, vineyards and wine companies large and small, are adopting sustainable and organic farming practices, reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a healthier planet.

Nick Jackson MW

President, Crescendo Wines, and author, Beyond Flavour

In the wine business I think you’re just grateful you’re here after another year. It’s competitive. My import business is only 18 months old, so I’m grateful it’s here. Especially someone like me who comes from an academic background — it’s a different life on the street selling wine.

Matt Schone

CEO, Texas Wine Club

We’re grateful for the underdogs — all the grape growers and winemakers that decided to begin their craft and passion in spite of the challenges & uncertainties. And particularly all the beautiful stories that have come from that - from grape to bottle to consumer.

Sam Lando

Owner and proprietor, Lando Wines

One of the things I’m most grateful for are my dear friends in the wine business (growers, vineyard managers, colleagues in marketing/operations, our mailing list friends). Over the 30 years I’ve been in this business, it’s never been more difficult. Without great friends & relationships, it would be much more challenging. Happy and healthy holidays to everyone!

David White

Author, But First, Champagne

My answer is very lamely my family and our security — with all that means. In a time where there’s so much conflict in the Western World, how fortunate are we to be in the United States today. If you’re reading The New Wine Review, in the grand scheme of things, you’re a pretty fortunate human. I'm thankful for that.

Andrea T

Writer, Mas Vino Please

I'm grateful for my online wine community that has turned into an in-person community and friends — and the perfect bottle of holiday wine: Cinsault!

Edward Chisholm

Author, A Waiter in Paris

I'm grateful for the bistros and cafés and the lost souls that work there and pass through; those places in every city with the warm orange light that welcomes you regardless of the weather or the time of day; havens that let you sit there long after you've finished your drink, often late into the night, reading, writing or just watching. Places for the solitary where you never feel alone. Our cities would be infinitely less interesting without them.

Annapurna Belani Ellis

Founder, The Somm Pour

This year has had its fair share of stress and struggle: moving homes, building trust and confidence through wine certifications, and establishing The Somm Pour, all for and around my passion for wine. But if there is one thing that this journey has taught me is that grapes that struggle make excellent wine. Likewise, there is a bigger picture, a passion, a life worth living that may not be seen in the day to day. And so, to quote Rumi, gratitude is wine for the soul. And I'm drunk on it.

Jess Druey

Founder, Whiny Baby

I am thankful for the magic of wine bringing people together! Every bottle is an invitation to put our phone away, live in the moment and connect with those around you. As we head into the holidays I am thankful for the memories that are about to be shared together with loved ones.
