The story of Jefferson's Ocean is well known but the finer details of its origin and timing in the marketplace remain a mystery to some. According to Jefferson's founder Trey Zoeller, the very first ocean's voyage experiment began in 2008. That whiskey was put on a ship and aged for more than three and a half years at sea. The end product—because of the amount of agitation and temperature variation—ultimately poured like black bourbon syrup. The flavors were condensed and Zoeller described it as "unlike any other bourbon" he ever tried.

This bottle is from the first commercially released batch of Jefferson's Ocean in 2012 known as Voyage 1. Because of the extremely low yield the bourbon was proofed down to 82.3 before final bottling.

The aging period at sea was lessened significantly for subsequent releases. Important details of most voyages are printed on the bottles themselves; Jefferson's most recent release was Voyage 29: Wheated.
